North Goa covers the northern parts of Goa and is one of the two districts in the state. It spans an area of around 1736 km2 of the territory and is further divided into a number of sub-districts/taluks. Panaji, which is the state capital of Goa is also the headquarters for North Goa. The district is divided into the following six taluks of Bardez (Mapusa), Bicholim, Pernem, Ponda, Sattari (Valpoi) & Tiswadi (Panaji).
North Goa is bordered by the state of Maharashtra to its north with the districts of Kolhapur & Sindhudurg and it comes as no surprise that Konkani is the mother tongue for the majority of locals in the district. Marathi as well as Portuguese languages are also popular amongst some locals.
